Sir Ian Murray McKellen is an English actor regarded as a British cultural icon. Born on May 25, 1939, he made his stage debut in 1961 and went on to earn five Olivier Awards for his performances in Shakespearean plays. He has received numerous accolades, including Tony, Golden Globe, and Laurence Olivier Awards, as well as nominations for Academy, BAFTA, and Emmy Awards. McKellen was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.
