In 1690, a proud noble's betrayal leads to his brutal execution and the surgical mutilation of his young son, Gwynplaine, who is left with an abhorrent grin carved into his face. Decades later, as an adult, Gwynplaine rescues a blind girl named Dea and together they grow up, despite Gwynplaine's shame over his disfigurement. With the help of Ursus, a kindly philosopher-showman, Gwynplaine navigates treacherous royal politics, outwits his tormentors, and ultimately finds love with Dea.
