Matt and Jean Spenser, a young married couple, inherit a cinema from Matt's great-uncle, expecting to acquire a modern and prosperous "Grand" cinema. Instead, they discover it is a decrepit "Bijou Kinema", known locally as "the Fleapit". Despite initial disappointment, the couple decides to reopen the Bijou with the goal of forcing their rival cinema owner, Mr. Hardcastle, to raise his bid. With the help of eccentric staff members, including projectionist Percy Quill and doorman Old Tom, Matt and Jean successfully turn the Bijou around through a series of unusual schemes, ultimately convincing Hardcastle to buy the cinema for £10,000.
