In 1940s Czechoslovakia, a nurse named Eliška/Hana joins a resistance movement led by her surgeon-lover Richard. When they're discovered, her lover flees, and Eliška must find a place to hide. She's taken in by a man from a remote mountain village, Joza, who agrees to hide her as his wife, helping her assimilate into rural life. As Eliška settles into her new life, she faces challenges, including xenophobic villagers and the threat of Nazi persecution, but also finds love and a sense of belonging with Joza, who eventually falls in love with her.
