Telephone technician Mal Granger (Edmond O'Brien), with his knowledge of electronics, is hired by gangster Vince Walters to expand his bookmaking operation. Granger takes over the business after Walters is murdered and ruthlessly climbs the ranks of the local crime syndicate. As he rises to power, he attracts the attention of East Coast mobster Larry Mason (Don Porter) and his wife Gail (Joanne Dru), who becomes his love interest.
