Vada Sultenfuss, now a 13-year-old teenager, travels to Los Angeles to research her deceased mother, with the help of her uncle Phil and a local boy named Nick. She visits various locations, including her mother's high school, and meets people who knew her, including a poet, a film director, and a police officer. Along the way, she learns more about her mother's past, including a brief marriage and a surprising connection to her biological father. Vada eventually returns home with a newfound understanding of her mother and a memento from Nick.
