To Have and Have Not

Harry Morgan, a world-weary American boat captain, operates a sport-fishing boat in Fort-de-France, Martinique, in the summer of 1940. Harry makes a modest living chartering out to tourists, crewed by his blithering friend Eddie, a one-time top mate reduced to a rummy by alcohol. A young American drifter, Marie ("Slim") Browning, arrives on the plane from Rio, and Harry is tasked by the hotel owner, Gérard, to help the French Resistance by smuggling people onto the island. Harry is aided by Slim, who has recently picked the pocket of a client, and together they become entangled in a complex web of politics and adventure.
