Clemency

Warden Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard) oversees the execution of inmate Victor Jimenez, alongside prison chaplain David Kendricks. The attending medical officer fails to find an adequate arm vein, prompting Bernadine to give permission to use the femoral vein, leading to the execution going awry. As Bernadine prepares for the execution of another inmate, Anthony Woods (Aldis Hodge), a quiet man who maintains his innocence, she struggles with the psychological and emotional demons of her job, as well as her personal life. Bernadine's emotional turmoil is further complicated by her husband's desire for her to quit her job and her own husband's (Wendell Pierce as Jonathan Williams) increasing frustration with her.
