Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) believes that sports can unite his divided nation and rallies South Africa's rugby union team, led by Captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), as they make their historic run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match. The team faces significant odds and doubt from both black and white communities, but Mandela's persuasion and leadership help them overcome these challenges and ultimately win the championship.
