In a small town in 1938, adolescent Sammy Perkins (William McNamara) and his sibling Ellie (Reese Witherspoon) form a close bond with Alice Guthrie (Patricia Arquette), a young girl with epilepsy and hearing problems, who is being kept in an abusive situation by her stepfather Jack Perkins (Beau Bridges) and stepmother Ada Guthrie (Susan Blakely).
