During World War II, a secret agent, Wong Chia Chi/Mrs. Mak (Tang Wei), must seduce and then assassinate Mr. Yee (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a high-ranking official of the Japanese puppet government in Shanghai. As she infiltrates his social circle, Wong finds herself falling in love with the man she is assigned to kill. Her mission becomes clouded when she reports her feelings to her KMT superior officer, who advises her to complete the mission, but also helps her navigate the moral complexities of her situation.
