Das weiße Band - Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte

An aged tailor, Christian Friedel, recalls his life as the schoolteacher of a small village in Northern Germany, where a series of strange events unfolded in the year leading up to WWI. The setting is the fictitious Protestant village of Eichwald, where a puritanical pastor, doctor, and baron rule over the area's women, children, and peasant farmers. The villagers are gripped by fear and suspicion, as unexplained harmful events occur, including a wire strung between two trees that causes the doctor to fall from his horse, and a young boy who goes missing and is found bound and badly caned.
