The 39 Steps

Richard Hannay, a mining engineer and intelligence officer, is caught up in an espionage conspiracy following the death of a British spy in his flat. He is entrusted with a coded notebook by a secret agent, Scudder, which he must crack to prevent war. Believing the Germans want to destroy the Royal Navy, Hannay embarks on a perilous journey to decipher the code, aided by suffragette Victoria Sinclair, and pursued by the police and German agents.
