Witek Długosz (Bogusław Linda), a functionary, runs after a train at the Łódź Fabryczna railway station. Three variations follow on how such an ordinary incident could influence the rest of Witek's life. In one scenario, Witek almost crashes into a fellow drinking beer but still catches a train, meeting an old Communist named Werner (Tadeusz Łomnicki) who introduces him to his first love, Czuszka (Bogusława Pawelec). In another, Witek fails to catch the train, joins the anti-Communist resistance, and meets up with Daniel, a childhood friend. In the final scenario, Witek catches the train, meets his future wife Olga (Monika Gozdzik), and pursues a career in medicine.
