In occupied Paris, an actress wed to a Jewish theater owner must keep him hidden from the Nazis while doing both of their jobs. Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve) and Bernard Granger (Gérard Depardieu), a womanizer, co-star in a new play called "the Disappearance" at the Théâtre Montmartre. As the Nazi occupation tightens its grip, the couple faces danger and desperation, including a Gestapo raid that prompts Marion to turn to Bernard for help. Ultimately, Bernard dedicates his life to the Resistance cause and forges a connection with Marion, who plays a leading role in his transformation.
