Heidi DeMuth (Talitha Bateman), a 12-year-old girl, embarks on a cross-country journey to discover the truth about her family. Along the way, she meets Alice Wilinsky, a kind elderly woman, and Georgia Sweet, a psychology student who offers support and comfort. In New York, Heidi meets Roy Franklin, a local police officer, and Ruby Franklin, who helps her uncover the truth about her mother's past, including a long-lost biological father, Elliot Hill, who recognizes her and calls her "soof."
