In the final months of his presidency, Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis) pursues a course of action to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery, despite facing opposition from Radical Republicans and Democratic congressmen. He relies on Francis Preston Blair (Character Name: Francis Preston Blair) to influence state conservative faction members to vote for the anti-slavery amendment, while also needing to secure support from lame-duck Democrats and agents offering federal jobs to their allies. Meanwhile, his son Robert Todd Lincoln (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) returns from Harvard Law School and announces his intention to enlist in the Union army, and Lincoln's wife Mary Todd Lincoln (Sally Field) fears for her son's safety and urges her husband to pass the amendment and end the war.
