Abbie Reynolds (Madonna), a heterosexual woman, and Robert Whittaker (Rupert Everett), a gay man, are best friends living in California. In 1992, they have a one-night stand, resulting in Abbie's pregnancy. Five years later, they have moved in together with their son Sam, struggling to navigate their unconventional relationship and custody battle. Abbie falls in love with Ben Cooper (Benjamin Bratt), a straight man, and wants to move away with her and Sam, causing Robert to fight for joint custody and ultimately leading to a surprising revelation about Sam's biological father.
