Italian-American widow Loretta Castorini believes she is unlucky in love and accepts a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Johnny, but finds herself drawn to his hot-tempered, estranged younger brother Ronny, an emotional and passionate man who blames his brother for the loss of his hand. As Loretta falls for Ronny, she learns that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance, and their intricate courtship is set against the backdrop of opera, tradition, and superstition. With a little help from Puccini's La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera, Loretta finds herself falling deeply in love, but must choose between her arranged marriage and a passion that threatens to upend her life.
