In 1984, gay activist Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) realizes that police are harassing the miners instead of his community, prompting him to organize a bucket collection for the National Union of Mineworkers during the Gay Pride Parade in London. Encouraged by the success, he founds "Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners" (LGSM), which faces homophobia from the mining community and anger from gay people who have been mistreated by miners in the past. The group eventually wins over the hearts of the miners in Onllwyn, Wales, through their solidarity and activism.
