In 1900, a clan attempts to strike a deal with a Chicago industrialist to build cotton mills in their Deep South town. Regina Hubbard Giddens, a ruthless and cunning matriarch, manipulates her 17-year-old daughter Alexandra into bringing her terminally ill father Horace back home to secure a share in the venture.
