Victor Sjöström stars as David Holm, a drunkard who, on New Year's Eve, is compelled by the ghostly driver of Death's carriage to reflect on his past mistakes. Alongside Sjöström, the film's cast includes Hilda Borgström as his wife, Astrid Holm as Sister Edit, and Tore Svennberg as Georges, a friend who once led David astray. In a series of flashbacks, Georges reveals how David's life took a dark turn, including his imprisonment and his subsequent search for his estranged wife, Anna. As the clock strikes twelve, David's soul is taken by Death's carriage, and he is given a second chance to make amends.
