In the late 19th century, two Swedish emigrants, Lasse Karlsson (Max von Sydow) and his son Pelle (Pelle Hvenegaard), arrive on the Danish island of Bornholm, seeking work on a farm and a better life. They face poverty, class differences, and bullying, but Pelle finds an unlikely friend and confidant in Erik (Björn Granath), a Swedish farm worker, and becomes determined to "conquer" the world.
