In 1885, in the kingdom of Marshovia, Count Danilo (Maurice Chevalier) spots the widowed Madame Sonia (Jeanette MacDonald) during a military parade. Alarmed by the news, King Achmed schemes to have a suitor return Sonia back to the kingdom. Danilo is selected to marry Sonia as punishment for his philandering, and he arrives at a cabaret in Paris where he reencounters Sonia, now calling herself "Fifi". Danilo and Sonia rekindle their romance, and despite being arrested and forced to marry under duress, they ultimately choose each other.
