Rose Morgan, a middle-aged English literature professor at Columbia University, lives with her vain, overbearing mother, Hannah. Gregory Larkin, a mathematics professor, unable to connect with his students and having recently ended a relationship, places an ad seeking a platonic female companion. Claire, Rose's sister, secretly responds to the ad for Rose, and they begin a relationship akin to dating without physical intimacy beyond occasional hugging. They eventually marry in a courthouse ceremony, but their relationship is tested when Gregory becomes uncomfortable with Rose's newfound attraction to him.
