In a darkly satirical retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, 14-year-old Vanessa Lutz embarks on a perilous journey to find her estranged grandmother after her mother's arrest and her stepfather's charges of drug and child abuse. Along the way, she picks up a ride from Bob Wolverton, a counselor at a school for boys with emotional problems who turns out to be the notorious "I-5 Killer." As they drive through California, Vanessa must confront her own traumatic past and outsmart her killer, leading to a tragic confrontation that will leave only one of them alive.
