In a quiet English town, 17-year-old Jo Halliday (Julia Lockwood) lives a fairly boring life working as a hairdresser and living at home, with her mother, father, and fitness-obsessed aunt. Her father, an accountant (Ted Ray), is continually disappointed that his dreamy daughter can't be more like his secretary, Millicent Jones. When Jo's steamy bestseller featuring characters based on the local population becomes a surprise hit, chaos ensues as the town's residents are shocked by their own secret lives: her mother is engaged in an affair with the retired army officer who gives her driving lessons, and a local doctor is portrayed as a philanderer.
