In 17th century France, aging composer Marin Marais recalls his former master, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, a renowned viol player who has dedicated his life to music after the death of his wife. As Marin visits Sainte-Colombe's home, he reveals that he seeks to learn from the master and is taken in as a student, but ultimately rejected due to his lack of musical merit. Years later, Marais returns to Sainte-Colombe, seeking redemption and one final lesson with his old master, who finally recognizes his musicianship and plays for him one last time before passing away. The film's haunting soundtrack weaves together the music of its era, featuring the viol and other period instruments in a poignant tribute to Marin Marais' life and art.
