In the 2005 film School of Life, Ryan Reynolds stars as Matt Warner, the son of Norman "Stormin' Norman" Warner, a legendary teacher who has won the annual student-elected Teacher of the Year award for 43 consecutive years. When Norman passes away, leaving behind a legacy and a void that his son must fill, Matt sets out to keep the family tradition alive, but faces stiff competition from the new history teacher, Michael D'Angelo, known as "Mr. D" to the students. As Matt tries to discredit Mr. D, he discovers a secret that shakes him to his core: Mr. D is terminally ill. With this newfound understanding, Matt changes his ways and wins over the hearts of his students, ultimately leading them to victory in a basketball game, with a memorable cameo by the cheerleader Chase Witherspoon.
