In 1883 New York, Clarence Day Sr., a straight-laced patriarch, struggles to manage his household as efficiently as his Wall Street office. His wife Vinnie, played by Irene Dunne, and their four sons, including Mary Skinner, played by Elizabeth Taylor, all have red hair like him and her. The family's daily life is marked by demands for change from Clarence Sr., who eventually agrees to be baptized after pressure from his wife and a visit from Reverend Dr. Lloyd.
