In 1950s Italy, a humble postman named Mario is hired to deliver mail to the island's only customer, renowned poet Pablo Neruda. As they form an unlikely friendship, Mario finds solace in poetry and begins to woo Beatrice, a beautiful young woman. With Neruda's guidance, Mario expresses his love through poetry, eventually winning Beatrice's heart. But when the poet returns to Chile, he leaves behind a legacy that includes recordings of island sounds and a son born from Mario's soon-to-be-born child, forever changing their lives.
