The Americanization of Emily

During World War II, a United States Navy adjutant is roped into a reckless stunt by his superiors, becoming a war hero by being the first American sailor killed on D-Day. In this black comedy anti-war film, James Garner plays Charlie Madison, a cynical and efficient adjutant who falls in love with an Englishwoman while trying to avoid a senseless mission that will make him a hero. But as he becomes embroiled in a fake combat film to document his own death, Charlie must choose between his desire for happiness with the woman he loves and his newfound role as a war hero.
