The Bridge on the River Kwai

A group of British soldiers, led by Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), are held in a Japanese POW camp in Thailand and tasked with building a bridge over the River Kwai for the war effort of their captors. After initially objecting to the task, Nicholson becomes obsessed with completing the bridge, which he sees as a lasting tribute to the British Army's superiority. American Commander Shears (William Holden) tries to sabotage the bridge from within and recruit his fellow prisoner, Major Clipton, for a commando mission to destroy it, but their plans are ultimately foiled by Nicholson's determination and the events that unfold on the day of the planned destruction.
