During World War II, Italian villagers band together to hide their wine from the German army in a clever and humorous battle of wits. Led by their new mayor, Italo Bombolini, who surprisingly proves himself resourceful despite his initial reputation as a buffoon, the townspeople successfully conceal a million bottles of wine before the arrival of a German detachment under command of Sepp von Prum. As von Prum becomes infatuated with the town's educated and elegant daughter, Caterina, he finds himself outsmarted by the villagers' cunning plan, leading to a tense standoff that ultimately ends in defeat for the Germans and victory for the people of Santa Vittoria.
