In post-war Japan, Yukiko Koda (Hideko Takamine) rekindles her forbidden love affair with Kengo Tomioka (Masayuki Mori), a married man who had promised to leave his wife for her, but instead tells her he cannot divorce Kuniko, making Yukiko resort to an abortion and later, taking on a life of economic hardship.
