At forty years old, Martin Belhomme (Jean Rochefort) leads a quiet life with his wife and two children in Paris, where he works at the family drugstore. One evening, Martin accidentally becomes embroiled in the 1968 student riots, helping the rioters destroy his own car as his family watches in disbelief. When Eva Silver (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful cabaret singer headed for Amsterdam, asks him to help her with a problem, Martin impulsively decides to follow her and begins an affair.
