Butley

The 1974 film "Butley" is set in Queen Mary's College, London and follows Ben Butley (Alan Bates), a middle-aged former T.S. Eliot expert struggling with life alone after his wife and male lover leave him on the same day. The dark comedy takes place largely in Butley's office shared with his protégé Joey, where he bullies students and colleagues while falling apart at the seams. As Butley's world disintegrates, he unleashes a torrent of homophobic language and obscenity before being punched by Reg Nuttall (Michael Byrne).
