In 19th-century France, journalist Gaston LeBlanc (Arthur Hansel) visits a sprawling, remote psychiatric hospital in the mountains where a Dr. Maillard has purportedly invented revolutionary treatments for the mentally ill. Claudio Brook plays Dr. Raoul Fragonard / Dr. Maillard, who is revealed to be an imposter leading a revolt and imprisoning the staff and guards. Gaston soon discovers that the inmates have taken over the asylum and implemented gruesome treatments, including a series of ritualized cult-like gatherings. As he tries to escape, Gaston must confront the true nature of Dr. Maillard's "soothing system" and ultimately join forces with the original staff to take back control of the hospital.
