In early 1960s Northern England, a bitter young coal miner from the West Riding of Yorkshire named Frank Machin is anaesthetized in a dentist's chair after breaking his front teeth in a rugby league match and recovering at a Christmas party. The film follows two interconnected parts: first, through flashbacks, as Frank recovers; second, after he fully regains his senses.
