True Grit

In 1878, 14-year-old Mattie Ross travels to Fort Smith, Arkansas, after her father is murdered by hired hand Tom Chaney. Sent to collect her father's body, she learns that Chaney has likely fled with "Lucky" Ned Pepper and his gang into Indian Territory, where the local sheriff has no authority. She inquires about hiring a deputy U.S. Marshal, choosing Rooster Cogburn, who initially rebuffs her offer, but eventually agrees to help her track down Chaney. As they journey through the American West, Mattie joins forces with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who is also pursuing Chaney for the murder of a state senator. Despite their differing opinions and methods, the three form an unlikely alliance, with Cogburn's rough-around-the-edges nature complementing Mattie's determination and LaBoeuf's skill as a lawman. Their pursuit takes them across treacherous terrain, from rural dugouts to dusty trails, as they close in on Chaney and his gang. Along the way, Mattie faces challenges that test her courage and wits, while Cogburn's troubled past threatens to derail their mission. In the end, it is Mattie who delivers the final blow, shooting and killing Chaney in a dramatic showdown. With Chaney defeated, Mattie and Cogburn return to Arkansas, where they finally bring justice to her father's memory. The film concludes with Mattie reflecting on the lessons she has learned from her journey with Rooster Cogburn, a man who has become like a surrogate father to her.
