Major Howell Brady (Jeff Chandler), a cavalry officer, is sent from Washington, D.C. to Fort Clark, Texas, to subdue a Kiowa uprising that has been raiding both white settlements and villages on Seminole reservations. There, he enlists the help of Chief Maygro (Henry Brandon) and falls in love with Elaine Corwin (Maureen O'Hara), the widow of a cavalry officer. Together with his two sergeants, Brady trains 25 Seminoles as counter guerrillas to lure the Kiowa in and ambush them, leading to a fierce battle that ultimately defeats the Kiowa, exposing a traitor within their ranks.
