Walter Pidgeon plays wealthy sportsman James Haggin on a Quebec estate called Wintapi, where he purchases an Irish setter named Red to start a line of top show dogs. Gilles Payant portrays Rene Dumont, a ten-year-old orphan boy who helps care for the dog and rebels against his owner's strict discipline.
