In German-occupied France, Lucile Angellier (Michelle Williams) is trapped in a stifled existence awaiting news of her husband Gaston's fate as a prisoner of war. When Parisian refugees start pouring into their small town, followed by a regiment of German soldiers, Lucile tries to ignore Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts), the handsome and refined officer billeted at her household. As they develop a powerful love, they lead each other into the tragedy of war.
