Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), an American author of Western pulp novels, arrives in postwar Vienna seeking a job offer from his childhood friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). However, Martins is told that Lime was killed in a road accident, but as he delves deeper into the mystery, he begins to suspect that something more sinister is at play. With the help of Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), Martins navigates the dark and corrupt world of postwar Vienna, where black marketeers, corruption, and exploitation thrive.
