Rachel Cameron (Joanne Woodward) is a 35-year-old schoolteacher living with her widowed mother in small-town Connecticut. When Nick Kazlik (James Olson), an old high-school classmate who now teaches at an inner city school in the Bronx, arrives for a short visit, Rachel begins to reevaluate her life and relationships. As she navigates her feelings for Nick, Rachel must confront her own desires and independence, with the support of her best friend Calla Mackie (Estelle Parsons).
