The fates of horses and those who own them are revealed as Black Beauty narrates his circle of life. Born on an English farm in the 19th century, he remains by his mother's side until he is sent to Birtwick Park, where he meets Squire Gordon and his family, including the beautiful chestnut mare Ginger, with whom he falls smitten. Through his own eyes, Black Beauty recounts the trials of his life, from the kindness of Joe Green, who nurses him back to health, to the cruelty of Reuben Smith, who mistreats him, and finally to the warmth of Jerry Barker's family in London, where he finds a sense of belonging.
