King Richard the Lionhearted launches a crusade to preserve Christianity in Jerusalem, as he enlists in order to avoid an arranged betrothal to Princess Alice of France and is followed by her on the Crusade. Along the way, he reluctantly marries Berengaria, Princess of Navarre, to secure food for his men, only to find himself at odds with Prince John, Conrad, Marquis of Montferrat, and ultimately, the powerful Muslim leader Saladin.
