Dudley Moore stars as Emory Leeson, a bitter ad executive who reaches his breaking point and finds himself in a mental institution, where he begins to thrive with the help of the hospital's patients, including Kathy Burgess (Daryl Hannah). With the help of Dr. Liz Baylor and other patients like George ("Hello"), they come up with wild advertising slogans that become a huge success, transforming the sanitarium into an advertising industry hub. Emory and Kathy eventually leave the hospital in style, opening their own agency with the help of Kathy's long-lost brother and Sony as their first client.
