The Northerners

In a surreal 1960s Dutch new town consisting of only a single street, this darkly amusing satire of bourgeois life and its repressions takes hold. Thomas' mother's sudden elevation to sainthood and the resulting shrine in their home frustrates his father, Jacob, a local butcher, as he struggles to manage his own desires amidst a cast of eccentric neighbors. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Thomas finds solace in his fantasies and escapades with Agnes, a mysterious woman who lives in the nearby forest, while Anton, a gun-crazed forester, navigates his own tumultuous life outside of his family. As tensions build, the town's dark underbelly is revealed, leading to a tragic confrontation that ultimately sets off a chain of events that change their lives forever.
