Thérèse Langlois (Alida Valli) owns a café in Puteaux, Paris, 16 years after her husband's disappearance during World War II. A tramp, Robert Landais (Georges Wilson), arrives in town and she believes him to be her husband Albert. Despite the lack of recognition from others, Thérèse tries to bring back his memory through conversations with friends, including his aunt Alice and nephew.
